1940 Census – California is 20% Complete

At 20% it might seem that California is behind in the effort to index.  After all some states are complete or nearly so.  But, remember, California’s population was just under 7 million, or 5.2% of the US population.  By contrast, Colorado which is one of the states that is completed had a population of just over 1.1 Million.  At 20% we have indexed that many names!

We are doing great.  Keep it up and we will beat the initial 6 month goal.  You can check on the progress by visiting the FamilySearch 1940 Census Page.  Mouse over the state and you will see how far along we are.  If you haven’t yet joined the effort it isn’t too late to sign up.  Go to the1940Census.com to get started.  Be sure to chose a society affiliation and you will instantly be eligible to compete for some great prizes.

If you are interested in other statistics from the 1940 census, go to the Census Bureau 1940 Census Page where you can download a variety of pdf files with statistics broken down by various elements such as age, internal migration patterns, rents, and much more.  Once you find your families in the census, these statistical sheets can help you understand their standing in society.
